Best Time to Visit China

China is large enough that the best timing depends on the route. Spring and autumn are the easiest all-round seasons, while summer and winter can still work well with the right destinations and pace.

01

Spring · March to May

Comfortable temperatures, flowers, tea fields and good city walking. It is one of the easiest seasons for Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou and much of Yunnan.

02

Summer · June to August

This can suit families tied to school holidays, but heat, rain and crowds matter. We usually build in more indoor breaks, early starts and realistic daily pacing.

03

Autumn · September to November

Often the most rewarding season for first-time China routes: clearer skies, comfortable walking weather and strong scenery in Beijing, Xi’an, Guilin and Zhangjiajie.

04

Winter · December to February

Good for travelers who prefer fewer crowds, northern snow scenes or city-focused routes. Some mountain and highland areas need extra weather flexibility.
